Mary Alexander McCutchen

Mary Alexander McCutchen, 101, died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at White Oak Estates. Services were held in Spartanburg, directed by Floyd’s Green-lawn Chapel.

Born April 26, 1907, in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late John Wilson and Nora Watkins Alexander and the widow of James McCutchen, Sr.

She was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg where her grandfather was the minister for many years in the early 1900s. Mrs. McCutchen was a graduate of Winthrop College, charter member of the Junior League of Spartan-burg, member of the Colonial Dames, the Reviewer’s Book Club, and the Garden Study Club.

She taught several years at Cedar Spring’s School for the Deaf and the Blind and at the School for the Handicapped, which later became the Charles Lea Center, and was involved for many years as a volunteer for Mobile Meals.

Survivors are: one son, James McCutchen, Jr. (Beverly) of Spartanburg; one daughter, Anne McCutchen Wilson (Dan) of Atlanta, Georgia; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
