Margaret McCutcheon Whitmore

Margaret McCutcheon Whitmore, 94, passed away May 10, 2009 at a Boise care center, with family members by her side. Margaret was born Dec. 27, 1914 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, the fourth of six children born to Rob Bishop and Amy Stewart McCutcheon. The family moved to

Boise when Margaret was six years old. She graduated from Boise High School in 1934, where she was a member of Job’s Daughters and the costume and dance clubs. She was working at Western Union when she met Carl E. Whitmore at a dance at Mile High. They later eloped and married Sept. 12, 1936. They raised four children, Marilyn, Janice, Dennis, and Carolyn.

Margaret loved being a homemaker and helping Carl as they created a small but successful business in trucking and construction. For forty years, she belonged to a monthly sewing club composed of close friends. Since Carl was an Elk, she was an Elkette for several years. She traveled throughout the country with Carl on business and pleasure. She loved to read and to listen to music, especially her favorite opera, Carmen.

Margaret had a very strong spirit and fount valiantly throughout her many illnesses and challenges. Of all her siblings and in-laws, and all their spouses, she was the last to move on. She just wouldn’t leave until her work here was finished.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 65 years, Carl, her daughter Marilyn Lee, and her five siblings, Ruth Gess,

Esther Zink, Stewart McCutcheon, Ted McCutcheon, Jeanne Uberuaga, and numerous close friends and other relatives.

Margaret is survived by her son, Dennis (Janine Bastian) Whitmore, daughters Jan Whitmore, and Carolyn (Tom) Reeves, grandchildren

Torre and Lexi Whitmore, Bret Bastian, John Brookover, Zoe (Byron) Covington, and Holly Black. A memorial service was held on May 20 at the Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel in Boise. Margaret was the granddaughter of Otis Eddy McCutcheon of Boise, Idaho and a descendant of Andrew and Jeanne (Adair) McCutcheon, who settled in Dryden, Tompkins County, New York.
