Charles E. "Sam" McCutchen

SHEFFIELD - Supernumerary Colbert County District Attorney Charles E. "Sam" McCutchen, the first Colbert prosecutor to serve only Colbert County, died Saturday Mr. McCutchen was appointed as Colbert's district attorney about 1964, when former district attorney Bryce Graham Sr. resigned to pursue private practice. He retired in 1977 and was succeeded by James A. "Jap" Patton, according to Dale Smith, who was hired by McCutchen and still serves as secretary in the Colbert District Attorney's office.

According to retired Circuit Court Clerk Sarah Blackwell, the district attorney in Colbert had served both Colbert and Franklin Counties until McCutchen took office. Sheriff John L "Buddy" Aldridge said he worked with McCutchen both as an Alabama Beverage Control agent and as sheriff when Aldridge was first elected in 1975. Aldridge said he was shocked to hear of McCutchen's death. "Sam was a real good prosecutor," Aldridge said. "He was an easygoing person and great to work with. He would go out of his way to help the officers working on cases."

McCutchen, 105 Pickwick Lake Drive, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1993, at Medical Center Shoals. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Episcopal Church, Sheffield, with the Rev.
