Carroll Sidney “Mack” McCutchen

Carroll Sidney “Mack” McCutchen, former resident of Fishersville, died Tuesday, November 20, 2007, at Kendal in Lexington, Virginia. Mr. McCutchen was born in Lawrenceville, Virginia on January 24, 1921, the second child of John A. and Daisye Abernathy McCutchen. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Rubye Coleman, and his wife of 57 years, Lorene Vaughan McCutchen.

Mr. McCutchen is survived by his children, Margaret McCutchen Prior and husband Ed of Poquoson, Kathryn McCutchen Mirabella and husband John of Rockbridge Baths, Alexis McCutchen Crickenberger of Collierville, Tennessee, and Susan McCutchen-Smith and husband Richard of Middlebrook. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Heather L. Brown and husband Steve, of Nashville, Tennessee, Ian L. Crickenberger, also of Nashville, James McC. Prior of Singapore and Poquoson, Corbett A. Smith of Staunton, Meda L. Smith and Sydney E. Smith, both of Middlebrook.

Mr. McCutchen was in the ROTC in the class of 1944 at Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he entered the U.S. Army. He saw active duty as an Infantry Unit Commander (Company “B” 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Division) from November, 1944 until the end of World War II. First Lieutenant McCutchen fought in France and Germany, earning the Bronze Star for his service in the Battle of the Bulge. He returned to VPI and received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering in 1947. From 1955 to 1982 Mr. McCutchen was employed by Hajoca Corporation in Staunton as an HVAC engineer.

The funeral and interment at August Memorial Park were private.

Carroll Sidney ‘Mack’ McCutchen was a descendant of Robert and Margaret (Callison) McCutcheon through son Jones and his second wife Rosanna Rodgers.
