Virginia Robinson McCutchan, 88, a lifelong resident of the Evansville, Indiana area and the wife of former University of Evansville basketball coach, Arad McCutchan, died at St. Mary’s Rehabilitation Institute after suffering a stroke. She lived at Christmas Lake in Santa Claus, Indiana for two decades after she and her husband retired from the University of Evansville. She most recently resided at the Atria Newburgh.
Virginia graduated from Bosse High School, attended Evansville College, and graduated from Indiana State University. She taught English composition at U. of E. to hundreds of students, many of whom visited her in retirement. She was a member of Trinity and Santa Claus Methodist Churches and Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. During her husband’s career, which included five NCAA College Division basketball championships, she was a dedicated supporter of the U. of E. Purple Aces. She graciously hosted team members at the McCutchan home for “popcorn and haircut” parties and entertained many of their fans after Saturday night home games. She was an avid reader and traveler and a member of The Santa Claus Garden Club and the Lincoln Club, which supported the Amphitheater and Young Abe Lincoln Drama at Lincoln State Park.
Virginia was pre-deceased by her husband, Arad, and her brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Carlyn Robinson. She is survived by her three children and their spouses; Allen and Emily McCutchan of Del Mar, CA, Marilyn and Don Lisman of Charlotte, NC, and Jeanne and Conrad “Van” Van Voorst of Rockchester, NY, and six grandchildren; Dianne and Melanie McCutchan, Jennifer Lisman Bunich, Scott and Brad Lisman, and Corey Van Voorst.
